Cabin Fever -Fireplace

I have already posted that we have been making some improvements in our living space. If you haven’t seen my other post about the shelf you can check it out here.

The other thing we wanted to improve was the fireplace. We didn’t hate it but it was just a little too interesting for our taste. Here is what it looked like:

This is what our fireplace looked like before we started.
I am not really sure what style you would categorize this fireplace as. It is interesting but we thought we could improve it a bit without spending too much.

Another strange thing about it is that it didn’t have a mantle, just a little “shrine” (for lack of a better word) above it.

We decided to remove the bricks that stick out and make the profile square. You may be able to see the line where Tyler cut the brick and is about to break it off.
This is what the top looked like after we removed the extra.
We also remove the little ledge on the shrine/alcove.
We found some kind of line inside the shelf of the alcove. A gas light maybe? Maybe it really was a shrine!

We found some heat resistant paint for the bricks. I almost got the “before” pic.
All painted! So much better.

We filled in the tiles with mud and sanded them to make it look like one piece. We plan to paint it white with some grey streaks. Then we will cover it with a glaze to make it (hopefully) look like marble. Then Tyler is going to build a wooden frame around it and a mantle above it. But that will probably wait until next winter, when we get cabin fever again. Until then I am happy with how it looks.
