About me
My grandparents on my mom’s side have an acre of land. In the front yard they have a fruit orchard with about 25 fruit trees. They have all kinds of fruit: apples, peaches, plums, pears, apricots, cherries and an almond tree. In the back yard is a very large vegetable garden. They also have grapes, as well as two types of raspberries, black and red.
Growing up I spent a lot of time at my grandparents house, especially in the yard. When they had a bumper crop of something my mom, aunt, and grandma would all work together to get the fruit preserved. We would go to grandma’s house early in the morning and pick the fruit, then we would spend the rest of the day in the kitchen bottling. As a kid I probably did not help much, just added to the general mayhem and stickiness, but it was a lot of fun.
Fast forward almost 20 years. I went to school, went on a mission for my church, got married and had kids. (That’s the short version.) We moved in with my grandparents for what was supposed to be three months but it has turned into 5 years and counting.
It has been great living in the place that brought me so much joy as a kid. As my grandparent’s health has declined they have not been able to care for their yard the way they used to. My grandfather passed away last year and we have taken on most of the work in the yard.
We have fallen in love with this place. We even enjoy all the work. I have learned so much in this process of figuring out how to take care of things. It has been such a rewarding experience. I hope you can join me on my journey.
